Sure, he's a TV show character, but we all love Connor DeLaurier!
Connor first appeared in Season Eight of popular Canadian teen drama Degrassi as an awkward kid obsessive about wearing the same clothes and sitting at the same desk-not to mention girls' underwear. He is prone to meltdowns and anger issues and is diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome after being expelled from the school. When he's allowed back in the school, he is relieved to have finally received a diagnosis, knowing now that there are people just like him.
The reason why I am choosing to feature Connor today is due to the fact that we watch him grow, mature, and become a brilliant, responsible, hard-working man throughout the show. The show lets us see how far Connor comes-and how it's possible for these people when they are simply understood and given a chance.
Yes, Connor does have his moments-getting caught breaking into the girl's locker room to steal underwear, making online friends with someone who says that she's a sixteen-year old girl-it turns out that she is a forty year old woman that's a pervert-and of course his famous pickup line "Did you know that cheese has four different types of bacteria?"
Connor is active in science, drama, student council, basketball, football, volleyball (I am SO glad that they made the autistic kid athletic)-he'll try basically anything! Well, I did say basically anything. Connor has recently revealed that he is possibly asexual-he "doesn't like the idea of sex"-and he's a great role model for other young adults who may also feel the same way. (As opposed to Sheldon Cooper, who don't get me wrong, we love, but he's a bit too stereotypical when it comes to someone who doesn't want to have sex.) He's also revealed that he has anxiety about driving on the highway-so do I, and many people today!
Connor was recently spotted asking his girlfriend Jenna to prom-decked completely out in astronaut costume. She said yes, of course. (I wish I could have found a clip on Youtube.) Later, he became the class valedictorian, and now, according to Degrassi Wikia, is attending university at California Institute of Technology. As said, Connor's girlfriend is named Jenna.
