Ahem: This is a very trippy drabble that I wrote featuring the cat of Mercy and Noreen, my characters from my alternate universe. It is inspired by a plushie that I recently got. I don't know why I wrote it. Enjoy! :D
P.S. Remember, this world is a cross between Puritan New England and Victorian Boston-it's not likely that either population would know what tacos were.
Normally Cat would be awake at this hour
sitting in wait for any unsuspecting mice, she thought. But the night was cold
and rainy, and she wanted nothing more than to curl up on her favorite blanket
and dream. So that’s what she did. Mercy, her mistress, was standing guard, and
Noreen, Mercy’s dear girlfriend, was writing in her quarters.
What was that food that Kelly, Noreen’s
brother, had been eating earlier? That he had slipped her a bite of? A taco? No
one else had ever heard of it. But she loved it! It was the best thing that she
had ever tasted – even better than mice, and that’s saying something.
So as Cat curled up on her blanket, she
drifted off into dreamland. As her dream world materialized before her, she
caught a glimpse of paradise. A land of tacos! Trees grew, bearing tacos on
their branches, and the sun itself was a giant taco, shining in the sky.
Cat meowed happily. What a happy world!
She began to trot through the meadow, lit by the light of the taco sun.
Suddenly a shape formed in front of her –
a taco! With arms and legs! “Mew!” Cat said. “Hello, Mr. Taco!”
Mr. Taco smiled. “Hello, Miss Cat,” he
said. “Welcome to Taco World.”
Cat was happy! Her new favorite thing, and
here was a world full of them! What a happy little cat she was!
“I am happy that you found your way here!”
Mr. Taco intoned. “I am the King of Tacos.” And Cat purred and rubbed against
him. If she could bring Mercy, Noreen, and Kelly here, she could live here
forever and be very happy! Maybe she’d ask them, when she woke up…
And wake up, she did. She heard a noise
that was outside her dreamscape. Slowly she felt herself coming back into
reality…her mistress was back from her watch! Seeing Mercy step into the
chamber, exhausted, Cat opened her eyes, stretched and yawned.
“Cat! You were out, were ya?” Mercy asked,
the light from the gas lamps illuminating her blue eyes and pale skin. “Adam’s
fall, it’s cold out there…” she yawned, sinking down onto the bed.
Cat was glad that her mistress was back –
she had missed her – but at the same time, she was sad. It was all a dream?
Taco World was all a dream? The Taco King wasn’t real? She mewed sadly. Her
dream wasn’t real…
But wait a minute…if it was all a dream…if
it wasn’t real…
What was that little fuzzy taco with eyes
doing on the floor?
Whoa…
