As most probably know, Koko is a gorilla with an in-depth knowledge of American Sign language, who can also easily comprehend spoken English.
In 1984, she asked for a cat for her birthday! She chose a Manx kitten that she named Ball. Sadly, Ball escaped and was killed by a car. Koko responded with great sadness, signing, "bad, sad" but later on she adopted two more kittens named Lipstick and Smokey (Smokey pictured above.)
Two years ago for her birthday, she picked out two more kittens, who she named Miss Black and Miss Grey! :D
