Well! Week Two ("White" phase-they've decided to do a red, white, and blue phase like the regular military) of BELT training is officially done, and I think that it's safe to say that we all learned a lot and had a blast!
Yesterday was full of field exercises such as map and compass training, as well as an interesting hands-on radio exercise in which all had a chance to both use a radio to call in a report of suspicious individuals, and then a chance to BE those "suspicious individuals!" I had the chance to dart around carrying a suspicious-looking box (wires coming out of the top and everything) and then even got to exchange my bomb for an AK-47! One of my battle buddies is quoted as saying "This makes me feel so badass!"
I also was assigned to Fire Watch (night guard duty) from 0300-0400 hours which was actually quite enjoyable. Duties involve making sure "no one comes through the door" as well as a patrol round of the armory every half hour. Very peaceful, actually.
Another class that I should mention is the very interesting class on flag etiquette that we had, and hands-on lessons on learning to fold the flag (PLEASE don't drop it!)
Who knows the legend of what's inside the ball decoration at the top of the flagpole? According to legend, encased inside the ball at the top of a flagpole is always a razor, a match, and a bullet. Should the base be attacked and the battle not be going well, the razor is so the flag can be cut down before the enemy can get to it, the match so the flag can be burned, and the bullet so either the defender can shoot himself rather than be taken prisoner. Crazy!
Also-one of our cadre, Major Catherine Lanzilotta, is a hospice nurse in her civilian life. As a matter of fact, one of her patients even called her as it was his birthday, and she put him on speaker and had us all wish him a happy birthday! Much respect to her and all of those who do her job.
Comment and leave an answer to "It is always perfectly acceptable to address anyone who is an E-5 or above, as "Sarge"-either "Yes" or "NOT ON YOUR LIFE."
And also-why is the First Sargent's pet rock named Ozzy?
I'll give you the answer to that: BECAUSE HE ROCKS.
