Jenna's Book Club
If you're looking for a gripping adventure read, we recommend Downriver by Will Hobbs.
This book follows the story of Jessie, a teen girl depressed and angry after her mother's death. Her grieving father sends her to an outdoor recreation program run by a Vietnam vet. His heart is in the right place, but Jessie doesn't trust him-particularly after a terrifying experience climbing Storm King Mountain-where several mountaineers have already lost their lives. While waiting to go on a rafting trip, Jessie and her companions decide that they can navigate the Colorado River on their own-and steal the equipment to set off down the rapids.
Throughout this book, Jessie's relationships with her rafting companions, never mind her trust of them, grows stronger. This book really hit home for me, as it shows how much extreme sports and teamwork can lead to heightened confidence and a sense of self-worth. The ending is good as well.
If you like this book, it has a sequel-River Thunder-which is highly recommended as well!
P.S. Here's a video of the real-life Lava Falls:
